UN Report: Land Degradation a Neglected Environmental Crisis Amid Worsening Fires and Floods

In a new report issued by the United Nations, experts warned that land degradation represents a "serious and neglected" environmental crisis despite the worsening extreme climate phenomena around the world. The report, titled "Protecting Our Most Vital Infrastructure: Combating Desertification," noted that while heatwaves become more deadly, fires ignite cities, and rising seas erase entire lands, the degradation of the land on which humanity stands remains a risk that does not receive adequate attention.

The UN report emphasized that desertification and soil degradation undermine the ability of ecosystems to support life and threaten the food and water security of millions of people, calling for healthy land to be considered "vital infrastructure" deserving protection and investment, similar to roads, bridges, and energy networks.

In a related context, another UN report revealed the suffering of women in the Sudanese city of El Obeid, where they face daily risks including drones during the day and rape at night while on their way to fetch water. This testimony highlights the impact of armed conflict on the most vulnerable groups, especially women who bear the burden of securing basic needs amid the collapse of services.

On a separate note, news reports indicated that gunmen carried out more than ten attacks in southern Thailand, resulting in two injuries. According to Thai PBS, the attackers set fire to vehicles belonging to public utility services, damaged mobile phone towers, and attacked administrative buildings and a commercial store.
